Cucurbit Breeding - Job Opportunities
There are many employment opportunities relating to the
cucurbit breeding project:
Undergraduate students interested in working on the breeding
project as an hourly employee should contact Todd Wehner.
Jobs involve assisting researchers in the field, greenhouse,
and laboratories. Work is full time in the summer, and 10
to 20 hours per week during the school year. Similar jobs
are available for those who qualify for the work-study program.
Undergraduates interested in working on their own research
as an intern should apply through the NC State internship
program.
Those interested in graduate programs leading to the M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees should contact the Graduate school for
application forms. Candidates should also contact the Graduate
Coordinator for Horticultural Science.
Career opportunities for students completing the M.S. degree
include plant breeding technician, usually for a large project.
Career opportunities for students completing the Ph.D.
degree include plant breeding project leader at seed companies
working on cucumber or watermelon, such as Harris Moran,
Hollar and Co., Novartis (Rogers), Sakata Seeds, Seminis
Vegetables (Asgrow, Petoseed), Sunseeds, Willhite, and other
seed companies. Research postions are available at land-grant
universities, or USDA/ARS research centers.
