Handout - Ten Strategies for Job Success

By Carol Kleiman, Chicago Tribune (February 1999)

Have you put off making your New Year's resolutions about your job? It's not too late to make them -- and keep them.

Here are 10 suggestions that I believe will accelerate your journey on the road to a happy and prosperous work year.

  1. Establish a professional relationship with your boss. You don't have to be best friends -- just make sure the door of communication is open.
  2. Join an association in your field. If you already belong to one, make it two. The information you'll get will be invaluable.
  3. Never lose your temper at work. Swear not to. You could also lose your job.
  4. Sit down and formulate a five-year career plan. Use it as a road map to take you where you want to go.
  5. Make friends with a colleague in another department or division of your company. It will serve both of you well.
  6. Give back to your community by doing volunteer work for something you really care about. You'll be helping others have a sense of purpose and more balance in your life.
  7. Bring your family to work and introduce everyone around. It will help to mere your personal and professional lives and create more understanding on both sides.
  8. Sign up for that course you know will make a positive difference in advancing your career. Attend it faithfully.
  9. Sign up for that course you know will make a positive difference in advancing your career. Attend it faithfully.
  10. Explore starting your own business if you have a marketable idea for it -- this time for real.
