Handout - Poster Production (General)
- Things that help (do's)
- Use complementary colors with good contrast
- Be consistent in style and format
- Plan for the number of pages that will fit (often 16 on
a 4'x4')
- Choose legible font style
- Make font size as large as possible
- Use minimum amount of text; make it concise
- Should be self-explanatory (may be viewed in your absence)
- Use horizontal format whenever possible
- Use graphics (photos, diagrams, and charts)
- Highlight titles or important points
- Use one main point per page (title above, development
of idea below)
- Make border spacing and positioning consistent across
pages
- Use mat board or foam core backing
- De-emphasize methods section
- Have handouts if possible (methods, business cards)
- Add a photograph of the author(s), university logo
- Make it portable (carrying method should protect poster
in transit)
- Plan poster mountings ahead of time (hook side of Velcro,
or pins)
- Things that hurt (don'ts)
- Use fuzz side of Velcro
- Use massive data tables
- Present trivial information or extraneous art (distracting)
- Be redundant
- Use journal-published tables or figures
